Fifty Years and Growing

In 1972, the year President Nixon visited China and Don McLean’s “American Pie” topped the music charts, our company got its start. A young artist named Craig Lundin was studying at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. His sculpture teacher, John Britton, had a small tree-care company and asked Craig if he would like to learn how to climb and prune trees. Craig said yes, and over the next year, they worked together part-time while following their own artistic paths. John taught Craig everything he knew about climbing trees safely, pruning them to bring out their natural beauty, and caring for them to ensure maximum health.

When John announced he was moving out of state, Craig acquired the “company” Tree Sculpture (a notebook with client names and addresses). He continued creating art but also began studying plant pathology, mycology and entomology. The more he learned about trees, the more he fell in love with them.

Fast forward to 1989, when gasoline prices reached an outrageous 98 cents per gallon. A group of clients asked Craig whether he could expand the company to provide landscape-maintenance services along with tree care. Craig and his wife Carol had decided to start a family, so the answer was a resounding yes. Over the next couple of decades, the company – and its reputation for quality work – continued to grow.

In 2012, alongside Tree Sculpture complete tree care, we added the name Terra Landscape to better express our comprehensive landscape management service. Tree Sculpture continues to perform skillful aesthetic pruning while Terra Landscape offers prize-winning maintenance, irrigation, design, and installation services. Craig’s son Cassidy Lundin is now President of TSG. The tradition of excellence started 50 years ago is still going strong today.
