Our Construction Department typically constructs new landscapes by assessing site conditions, choosing and arranging appropriate plants, and planting them correctly. But we also specialize in more traditional construction projects. One of the most common problems we are asked to solve is uneven concrete sidewalks that have been cracked or lifted by tree roots, creating dangerous trip hazards. One option is to demolish and re-pour the entire section of sidewalk, sometimes also cutting out a section of the tree’s roots. Another…

Not too many landscape plants are flowering this time of year. Camellias are still going strong, and California Poppies are just starting to show up in bright orange. Perhaps our favorite winter / early-spring bloomer is California Lilac (Ceanothus), with profuse flowers in colors from white to deepest electric blue. These native shrubs attract native bumblebees – one of the few nectar sources for them – and the flowers have a nice perfume. Perfectly adapted to summer drought, these evergreen shrubs are a great choice for…

Mulch may seem like just icing on landscape beds, but it’s way more than decorative. You can tackle three major landscape problems with the simple addition of local organic mulch. WeedsA thick layer of organic mulch smothers most weeds, and even the seeds won’t germinate without light and air. Even larger weeds are more easily removed – by decapitation below the mulch level! FeedsOrganic mulch breaks down quickly into rich compost, feeding the soil and invigorating the plants. It’s like a constant slow drip of all-natural…

Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia leucantha) pushes out purple wands most of the year. It attracts pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies. Plants are adapted to summer drought, untouched by deer, easy to maintain, and popular everywhere in the Bay Area. But among the 1,000 or so species of sage, many others thrive here and have most of the same strong points.

Extreme heat is becoming more common in the West, and you might think all plants would suffer equally. But some thrive with strong sun and high temperatures. We say It’s hot! and they say Bring it on!  Crepe Myrtle varieties with tribal names like Arapaho and Zuni are disease resistant and look good year round. The hotter, the better. Oleander loves the heat. Dwarf varieties like Little Red’ and Petite Salmon’ grow to just 4-5 ft tall and wide, so they never need pruning if planted in the right spot. Grevillea species are native …

In case you nearly missed it, we’re just reaching the end of California Poppy season! This is Eschscholzia californica, California’s state flower and a familiar roadside weed. Plants reach only 1-2 feet tall, and they grow well without water or fertilizer in the Bay Area. Orange is the most common color, but you can find them in many shades, including red, pink, pale yellow, and even white. You sometimes hear that it is illegal to cut our state flower, but that’s not exactly true. State law says you need permission to remove / sell…

Our client asked us to come up with a solution for this sad slope between a fence and a sidewalk. Over time, soil can wash away or become too compacted to accept irrigation. Then you’re left with a steep slope with poor soil and just a few plants hanging on. One solution would be to take out everything and start over with concrete retaining walls, a new irrigation system, and lots of new plants, but that can add up to an expensive project for such an out-of-the-way area. We took a more economical approach, performing a tune-up…

The client reached out to our design team about a disused fountain located in the middle of their corporate courtyard. They looked at a few possibilities: break out the concrete bottom and use it like a big planting pot or remove the fountain completely and create a landscaped seating area. All options seemed cost prohibitive. We came up with a simple, economical solution that also matched their modern style: Place large pots of Golden Goddess Bamboo in the fountain bowl and fill in around them with river cobble and local boulders….
