Our client asked us to come up with a solution for this sad slope between a fence and a sidewalk. Over time, soil can wash away or become too compacted to accept irrigation. Then you’re left with a steep slope with poor soil and just a few plants hanging on. One solution would be to take out everything and start over with concrete retaining walls, a new irrigation system, and lots of new plants, but that can add up to an expensive project for such an out-of-the-way area. We took a more economical approach, performing a tune-up…

The client reached out to our design team about a disused fountain located in the middle of their corporate courtyard. They looked at a few possibilities: break out the concrete bottom and use it like a big planting pot or remove the fountain completely and create a landscaped seating area. All options seemed cost prohibitive. We came up with a simple, economical solution that also matched their modern style: Place large pots of Golden Goddess Bamboo in the fountain bowl and fill in around them with river cobble and local boulders….

California Assembly Bill 1572 was passed into law last year and took effect on January 1, 2024. The bill prohibits the use of potable water for the irrigation of nonfunctional turf located on commercial, industrial, and institutional properties, homeowners’ associations, common-interest developments, and community-service organizations. Residential lawns are exempt. Nonfunctional turf (NFT) is defined as a lawn that is decorative only and not used for gatherings, walkways, or other activities. Street medians are considered NFT, but…

We expect colorful flowers in spring and summer and vibrant, fiery leaves in fall. But what about winter? After the holiday decorations are gone, what will provide color? Never fear, winter bloomers are here! Camellias are tough, reliable shrubs with spectacular winter flowers in red, white, and all shades of pink. Easy to grow in the Bay Area. Rosemary’s Latin name means dew of the sea – and this tough little plant will thrive and bloom even on seaside cliffs. Choose from creeping and upright varieties. Hellebores are …

The best organic mulch is local and affordable. All natural, with no dyes or chipped wooden pallets, just clean, hand-sorted green waste. Varied, like the forest floor, with a mix of arbor chip and fresh ramial chipped wood (recently living green material that breaks down quickly and adds a shot of nitrogen to the soil). A sort of micro composting every time you mulch. Cheaper than commercial mulch. More than our waste – it’s local hand-screened gold. The best organic mulch is applied correctly. First, we chop down aggressive weeds…

When you think of autumn leaves turning brilliant colors, you might think of Vermont, Maine, Oregon, or Arkansas – but California holds its own! Look for the flaming colors of Ginkgo, Red Maple, Sweet Gum, and Chinese Pistache in the North and East Bay. Rossmoor, in Walnut Creek, has a particularly showy population of trees, and folks from all over the country travel there to see them in their autumn glory. Our Design/Construction team can find just the right tree to bring fall color to your property, and our Tree division can…

Here at Terra, we like to keep our people up to date on the latest and greatest – and that includes newly available trees that are adapted to our long dry season. We recently sent a team to Devil Mountain Nursery for a workshop focused on unusual drought-tolerant trees for Bay Area Gardens. Several new species are being tried, but our favorite so far is the ISLAND OAK (Quercus tomentella). It’s a small evergreen tree – only about 25 tall and wide – with a symmetrical shape and attractive leaves. Native to the Channel Islands, this…

The term mulch applies to any material that is spread on top of the soil to retain moisture and discourage weeds. Mulches may be inorganic (gravel based) or organic (plant based). In most cases, plant-based mulch is best for planting beds. It breaks down naturally and acts as a slow-release fertilizer for the soil. It looks and acts just like the forest floor! Popular organic mulches include redwood bark, shredded cedar, and dyed wood (made from shredded pallets). Arbor chips (wood chips made from trees that have been run…

We do our best to keep up with the latest horticultural information and landscaping trends, so a management team recently attended the Norcal Landscape and Nursery Show at the San Mateo Event Center. On the main floor, we visited booths with information on everything from new plant introductions to the latest earth-moving equipment and irrigation innovations. Foothill College, Suncrest Nurseries, Garton Tractors, San Marcos Growers, The Urban Farmer – so much to learn about! John Greenlee, author of The American Meadow Garden,…

When it came time to install landscaping for our new offices in San Leandro, company president Cassidy Lundin had a special request. Instead of a boring lawn edged with the usual clipped shrubs, he envisioned a habitat garden that would support local wildlife like butterflies, hummingbirds and bees. No problem! We planted Butterfly Bush (Buddleja), Daylilies (Hemerocallis), Santa Barbara Sage (Salvia leucantha Santa Barbara’), Butterfly Weed (Asclepias), Lion’s Tail (Leonotus) and a variety of native sages and manzanitas. These…
